Ernessa T. Carter has worked as an ESL teacher in Japan, a music journalist in Pittsburgh, a payroll administrator in Burbank, and a radio writer for American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest in Hollywood. Carter's also a retired L.A. Derby Doll (roller derby). A graduate of Smith College and Carnegie Mellon University's MFA program, and 32 Candles is her first novel.

She recently made history by landing on the cover of Playboy magazine's first 2-month issue, July/August 2009. She has been featured on the Maxim Hot 100 list two years in a row and made it onto Entertainment Weekly's Must List for 2009. Olivia wrapped roles in "Iron Man 2" with Robert Downey Jr. and "Date Night" with Tina Fey and Steve Carrell.
